My late uncle was 4th engineer on the Radhurst. My father served on HMS Dasher-an escort carrier similar to the Card. This vessel sank in 1943 in the Firth of Clyde under disputed circumstances. You have a terrific website and I wish all existing crew members a happy and joyous reunion.

June 15, 2008

Jeanne and I won't be able to attend the reunion in September in New York so we are sending some news now.

On May 20 Jeanne was diagnosed with leukemia. She was admitted to Rochester Methodist Hospital, part of the Mayo Clinic, on May 26 and began her treatment the next day. Following two and a half weeks of treatment she was released on June 12 and allowed to go home to Albert Lea.

We are fortunate that our daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Kevin Johnson, live in Rochester so I stayed with them. However, during Jeanne's stay I developed a case of the shingles. I was diagnosed with shingles after a visit to the emergency room the morning of June 7. Since I, of course, wasn't able to visit her at Methodist any more I decided to go back to our home to Albert Lea.

Instead of coming to our home, Jeanne is staying with our son and daughter-in-law, Reid and Sherry. They live about a mile from us so that is very convenient. She will continue her treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Albert Lea with some treatment or visits to Methodist Hospital in Rochester. Friends and relatives have all volunteered their time and talents and have been a great help.

We want to wish all of you a good reunion and will be thinking of you.

Your shipmate, K Division,

Dick Ulve

Comments: Although this not the normal type of information found about the U.S.S.Card, it may have significance to some. The Card was taken out of mothballs on the James River to transport a U.S. Army Helicopter Company to Alaska from Norfolk in 1961.

I was a helicopter mechanic in the 65th Transportation Company, Light Helicopter, at the time and sailed with her on that interesting voyage. Passed through the canal and refueled in Long Beach prior to making our way north to Cook Inlet and Anchorage Alaska. We unloaded the aircraft, vehicles, supplies etc. and headed to Fort Wainwright, Fairbanks where I remained for another 18 months.

The first in Paducah, KY and the next one in Idaho Falls. I met some of the most wonderful people I've ever had the plesure to know. I'm sorry no one knew my Dad. It would have been wonderful to hear stories about him. But the stories I heard from others were so interesting to me and I learned so much. I have so much respect for all the men who served on the Card and what a joy to meet so many of them and their families. Comments: My father was on the USS CARD in WW2
his name was Clair B. Winchell Jr. He was in many sea battles.. He died 25 years ago and i'm allways looking for men that know of him or were friends with him or have photos of him. All his photos were lost years ago in a move from the East to California in 1948. He was a good man and father.

Comments: After the Hornet (CV8) went down, my dad, John Leslie Richards, was flightcrew on the CARD from what he said was her first cruise until Spring 1945 when he went to PaxRiver. Dad died in 1995 but he spoke often and warmly of the CARD and his shipmates and the reunion he did get to attend. His last trip out
West months before he died included Washington state and a visit with an old shipmate from the CARD. Of both his WWII carriers, she was his favorite.

Comments: This is a great site and I think Justin is doing an
excellent job of keeping it current. A friend of mine, Gary
Minor, referred me - his Uncle served on the Card. Gary is
a talented photographer and artist/illustrator. I think it
would be wonderful if those who served on the Card would
list the names of those they remember and enter them here.
